THE PROBLEM

Japanese addresses in Latin characters are where orders go wrong.

  • 01

Typos in Latin characters slip through

A Japanese address typed in Latin characters can name the wrong town, skip the house number, or pair a postal code with the wrong city. Shopify accepts the order anyway.

  • 02

    Autofill is not validation

Shopify fills in the prefecture and city from the postal code, but every field stays editable and the house number is always typed by hand.

  • 03

    Labels can’t take Japanese characters

Carriers and 3PLs outside Japan print labels in Latin characters. An address typed in kanji or kana comes back as a manual fix before it can ship.

WHAT IT CHECKS

What does the app check in a Japanese address?

Checkout Address Validator is a Shopify app that validates Japanese shipping addresses typed in Latin characters against Japan Post data. Each field is compared with the official record for that postal code, and the expected value appears under the field.

Postal code exists

A postal code that is not in Japan Post data is flagged before the order goes through.

Prefecture and city match the postal code

Tokyo and Shibuya must both belong to 150-0001. A mismatch shows the expected value right under the field.

Town is in the address line

The address line has to contain the town for that postal code, such as Jingumae, in Latin characters.

House number is present

An address that stops at the town name is blocked, with an example of the format to add.

Japanese characters are blocked

Kanji and kana in the city or address fields are stopped, so labels always print. Stores whose customers type Japanese use the Japanese address mode instead.

Error messages in English and Japanese

Built-in messages follow the checkout language. Edit any of them in the app settings.

Spelling variations of the same place are accepted, so correct addresses are not blocked.

  • Shinbashi or Shimbashi
  • Osaka, Oosaka, or Ohsaka
  • Shibuya, Shibuya-ku, Shibuya City, or Shibuya Ward
  • "Kohoku-ku, Yokohama" or "Yokohama-shi Kohoku-ku"
  • "1-2-3 Jingumae" or "Jingumae 1-2-3"

The app validates and blocks. It never rewrites what the customer typed.

FAQ

Questions from stores shipping to Japan

  • 01 Who is this app for?
Stores located outside Japan that ship to customers in Japan, such as Korean beauty brands, D2C brands in the US and Europe, and cross-border stores that fulfil through a Japanese 3PL. It validates Japanese shipping addresses that customers type in Latin characters.
  • 02 What exactly does it check?
Whether the postal code exists, whether the prefecture and city match that postal code, whether the address line contains the town for that postal code, whether a house number is present, and whether the city or address fields contain Japanese characters. All checks run against Japan Post data.
  • 03 Does Shopify validate Japanese addresses by default?
No. Shopify’s built-in address suggestions only fill in fields; they do not block an order when the postal code, city, and address line disagree, or when the house number is missing. Checkout Address Validator adds that check on top of the standard checkout and stops the order until the address is corrected.
  • 04 How should a Japanese address be written in Latin characters at checkout?
Postal code as seven digits (150-0001), the prefecture (Tokyo), the city or ward (Shibuya), and the address line with the town followed by the block and house number (Jingumae 1-2-3). Shopify fills in the prefecture and city from the postal code; the customer adds the town and house number. The app checks each of these fields against Japan Post data.
  • 05 Will it reject a valid address that is spelled a little differently?
No. Common spelling variations of the same place are accepted: Shinbashi or Shimbashi, Osaka or Oosaka or Ohsaka, Shibuya-ku or Shibuya City or Shibuya Ward, the ward written before or after the city, and the house number before or after the town. Upper and lower case, commas, and the hyphen in the postal code do not matter either. An error only appears when the address points to a different place than the postal code.
  • 06 Does it rewrite or transliterate the address?
No. The app only validates. When something is off, it shows an error under the field with the expected value, and the customer corrects the address before placing the order. What the customer typed is never changed.
